The City of Buford is continually improving our natural gas pipeline infrastructure with an ongoing renewal program. The City of Buford gas system brings safe, reliable and environmentally friendly natural gas to over 40,000 customers throughout 5 different counties.

In addition to maintaining the safe condition of our pipelines through regular inspections, we use state-of-the-art technology to ensure the integrity of our system. With the newest technologies, the Buford Public Works Center (1895 Peachtree Ind. Blvd., Buford GA 30518) continuously monitors the flow of natural gas through our pipelines and any changes in operating conditions. Our stations monitor flows and operation pressures and have the ability to adjust and shut off natural gas flowing in our distribution lines.

Whenever a Buford Gas Department Representative visits your home or business, they will provide a City of Buford identification badge. If you have concerns during a site visit, please contact customer service at 678-889-4600 to confirm that a gas representative has been scheduled to perform work at your home or business.

Excess Flow Valve Notice

CITY OF BUFORD
EXCESS FLOW VALVE NOTICE

Excess Flow Valves (EFVs) are mechanical shut-off devices that can be installed in the natural gas pipe running to the gas meter at your property (the “service line”). An EFV is designed to shut off most of the flow of natural gas automatically if the service line breaks, for example, due to an excavation accident. Stopping the flow of gas from a broken service line significantly reduces the risk of natural gas fire, explosion, personal injury and/or property damage.

You may request that City of Buford install an excess flow valve on the service line to your property. If you notify us that you want an EFV we will contact you to discuss your specific situation and the cost of installation and maintenance. EFVs cannot be installed on some service lines due to high gas flow, low pressure or other factors. EFVs are not designed to close if a leak occurs beyond the gas meter (on house piping or appliances). EFVs also may not close if the leak on the service line is small. And, if you add additional gas appliances, for example, a pool heater, emergency generator, etc., the additional gas flow may cause the EFV to close. If you request an EFV we will inform you if your service line cannot accommodate an EFV.

If an EFV can be installed on your service line and you choose to have this done, we will set up a mutually agreeable date when we will install an EFV on your service line.

You will be billed for the cost of installing the EFV. The average installation cost is typically $500-$1,000, but the actual installation cost will depend on the difficulty of installation. We will inform you of the actual cost before you make the final decision that you want an EFV.

EFV replacement may be necessary if you add additional gas appliances, such as a pool heater or emergency generator that exceeds the capacity of the EFV. If it becomes necessary to replace the EFV on your service line you will be billed $500-$1,000, actual installation cost will depend on the difficulty of replacement.

***Please note that this is an optional service provided by the City of Buford as required by the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration. Single Family Residences with new or renewed gas service since February 12, 2010 will already have an Excess flow valve installed.
